John, it can't in many ways.
Chris you are correct for the most part except the Idea of three earth days.
I have a very old Jewish Pentateuch that states the following on the days interpritation in the Bereshith (genesis): ONE DAY. Not an ordinary day but a Day of God, an age. Earthly and human measurment of time, by a clock of human manufacture, cannot apply to the first three days, as the sun was not then in existence (thus the 24 hour day to circle it). The beginning of each period of creation is called morning: its close evening (Delizsch), in the same way we speak of the morning and evening of life. "With him a thousand years, nay a thousand ages, are but a day that is past" -Psalm XC4-
Now, this book is over a hundred years old (quoted from), and is not the result of the current debate, but does show a clear transaltion error in the way the bible is studied by most protestant christians.
So with respect to your 6000 years comment you could not be more wrong. If you wish to counter the point then present an older version of Genesis (Bereshith) than the one presented in the Pentateuch.
